The generalist nursing training includes geriatric, nursing and child care. The qualification is recognized throughout the EU. There is a shortage of over 100,000 nursing staff across Germany – the chances are excellent for international applicants with a suitable language level. Physically and emotionally demanding. Shift and weekend shifts are an integral part.

For applicants with nursing knowledge from their home country: partial recognition possible, training duration can be shortened. Recognition advice recommended in advance.

02
Care & Health

β˜… Top perspective
3 years Β· Software development Remuneration: €900–1,100 gross (1st year of apprenticeship) Language level: B2 Β· English is an advantage

Previous knowledge from your home country (abandoned computer science degree, own projects, GitHub profile) can be crucial in the interview.

04

Good chances
3 years Β· IT infrastructure / networks Remuneration: €880–1,050 gross (1st year of apprenticeship) Language level: B2

Networks, servers, IT security, system administration, support. Wide range of applications from small businesses to data centers. Slightly less pressure from applicants than in application development, but also excellent future prospects.

β˜… Strongly increasing demand
3.5 years Β· Craft business/construction company Remuneration: €800–980 gross (1st year of apprenticeship) Language level: B1–B2

Installation, maintenance and repair of electrical installations. By expanding renewable energies and heating transition demand is increasing rapidly – especially for solar technology and heat pump installation. Master's path well developed after completion.

Electrician professions have legally regulated safety requirements in Germany. Have foreign qualifications checked for recognition in advance.

06
Crafts & technology

Automotive mechatronics engineer

Solid demand
3.5 years Β· Motor vehicle business / car dealership / workshop Remuneration: €800–950 gross (1st year of apprenticeship) Language level: B1–B2

Diagnosis, repair and maintenance of motor vehicles including electric and hybrid vehicles. One of the most frequently chosen apprenticeships. Many international applicants with a technical background bring practical experience. Change through electromobility requires ongoing training.

07
Industry & Production

Industrial mechanic

β˜… Best compensation
3.5 years Β· Industrial company/mechanical engineering Remuneration: €950–1,100 gross (1st year of apprenticeship) Language level: B2

β˜… Best compensation
3.5 years Β· Industry / Automotive / Mechanical Engineering Remuneration: €1,000–1,200 gross (1st year of apprenticeship) Language level: B2

Combination of mechanics, electronics and IT – one of the most versatile industrial professions. Very high remuneration through collective bargaining, excellent opportunities for advancement. Anyone who has technical training clearly has better chances here than without a background. The best wage-benefit ratio of all training occupations.

09
Commercial & Office

High competition
3 years Β· diverse industries and companies Remuneration: €800–950 gross (1st year of apprenticeship) Language level: C1 recommended

Organization, written communication, accounting basics, clerical processing. One of the most common apprenticeships - the number of applicants is correspondingly high. Realistic for international applicants only with very good German – Error-free written communication is required every day.

Strategic path: first complete technical or craft training, then gain further commercial qualifications after a few years - this is more realistic than starting straight away with B2.

10
Gastronomy & hotel industry

Chef/cook

Low entry
3 years Β· Restaurant / Hotel / Catering Remuneration: €680–800 gross (1st year of apprenticeship) Language level: B1

Can be used as an introduction to Germany. Long-term: Plan for further qualification as a chef, restaurant manager or towards self-employment.

Opportunity realism

Where international applicants have good opportunities – and why

Not every profession is equally accessible. This assessment is based on demand, language requirements and typical experiences of international applicants in Germany.

high
Best opportunities for international applicants

Nursing, electrical engineering, mechatronics, IT

A massive shortage of skilled workers results in few local applicants. Companies are prepared to invest in international trainees – even if your German is not yet perfect. Language support is partly financed by the company or the Federal Employment Agency. State placement programs (Triple Win) also make it easier to get started.

medium
Doable with solid preparation

Automotive mechatronics, warehouse & logistics, hotel industry

Demand exists, but less critical than in nursing or technology. Applications with a solid B1-B2 and practical previous experience are received positively. Without previous experience, it is advisable to take your own initiative - internships or shadowing in the company of your choice before applying.

difficult
Very high language level required

Commercial professions, banking, administration

Many local applicants, at the same time very high language requirements in spoken and written. Without C1, direct entry into commercial apprenticeships is not realistic for most international applicants. Recommendation: first receive technical or craft training, then further commercial qualifications.

How to find the right career

Choosing a career is not just a question of interest - language level, physical ability, place of residence and previous experience play an equally important role. An honest self-assessment saves time and disappointments.

Questions that should be answered before choosing a career

Request advice

Five questions about choosing a career

QuestionWhy it is crucial
What level of German do I currently have?Directly determines which careers are realistic. Under B1, most applications are pointless – language first, then application.
Do I have previous experience in the professional field?Previous technical experience (even informal) can significantly improve application chances - especially in crafts and IT.
Where in Germany will I be trained?Remuneration, cost of living and demand vary greatly from region to region. Training in Erfurt or Dresden costs less than in Munich.
Can I do physically demanding work?Crafts, care and gastronomy are physically intensive. This is not a question of will, but of personal suitability and health.
What comes after training?A career with a clear path to advancement (master craftsman, technician, degree) offers more long-term prospects than a degree without a connection.
The most common mistake: choosing a career because it seems easy to access – not because it fits your own situation. Two to three years of training is long enough to take your career choice seriously.
