Language requirements – the central hurdle

Goethe, telc or TestDaF – which exam for which visa?

For almost all residence permits except tourism, proof of language skills is required. The Rabat Embassy only accepts official certificates (not certificates of participation).

02 Language certificates

A1, B1, B2, C1 – what is needed for what

  • A1 (Start German 1): Spouse reunification, job search visa (minimum requirement).
  • B1 (Goethe B1, telc B1, DTZ): Settlement permit, naturalization, lots of training, simple work visas (e.g. helper).
  • B2 (Goethe B2, telc B2): Nursing professionals, commercial professions, skilled worker visa for many professions.
  • C1 (TestDaF 4×4, DSH-2, telc C1 University): Studying at a university, doctors, pharmacists, teachers.

The most popular exam in Morocco is the Goethe Certificate (Institute in Rabat and Casablanca). telc exams are also accepted but are less common.

Exam places at the Goethe-Institut are often fully booked months in advance. Register early – even before you have completed all of your other documents. You can submit the certificate later.

Work & Care – strong demand

Work visa for nurses, craftsmen and engineers

German employers are specifically looking for skilled workers from Morocco, particularly in nursing, crafts and engineering. A concrete job offer is a prerequisite.

03 Work visa

Job offer, recognition, language skills B1/B2

  • Nursing professionals: Particularly high demand. Requirement: Completed training as a nursing specialist, recognition in Germany (runs parallel), language certificate at least B2 (telc B2·C1 Nursing).
  • Trades (electricians, welders, mechanics): B1 is often enough. Work experience is more important than formal qualifications. Recognition by the Chamber of Crafts required.
  • Engineers: Mostly B2–C1 required. The recognition of the degree (Chamber of Engineers) can begin before the visa application.
  • Mediation: Many Moroccan workers come through special programs (e.g. Triple Win for Care) or direct recruitment.
The recognition of foreign professional qualifications usually takes 3-6 months. Start this process as early as possible, preferably before you apply for the visa. Moroccan degrees are often viewed positively in Germany.

Study in Germany

Study visa – university entrance, financing, language c1

Moroccan students are welcome in Germany. Access to the university requires recognition of the Baccalauréat.

04 Study

Baccalauréat, preparatory college, financing

  • University entrance: The Moroccan Baccalauréat alone is not enough for direct admission. You need either:
    • a preparatory college (1 year) in Germany,
    • or 1-2 years of study at a Moroccan university (depending on the subject),
    • or very good grades in the Baccalauréat (≥ 14/20) for certain subjects.
  • Language: C1 with TestDaF 4×4 or DSH-2. IELTS/TOEFL is sufficient for English courses, and basic knowledge of German is often also required.
  • Financing: Blocked account €934/month (approx. €11,208 per year). Can be done through Fintiba, Expatrio or an account with a Moroccan bank.
  • Scholarships: DAAD, gifted funding organizations, Moroccan government scholarships – check the options before submitting your application.
The preparatory college is often perceived as a "detour", but it is a proven method of preparing linguistically and professionally. The success rate in the subsequent assessment test is high.

Family reunification

Bringing spouses and children with you – requirements for Moroccans

Family reunification is possible if the person living in Germany has a secure residence permit. The biggest hurdle is the A1 language certificate for the spouse joining you.

05 Family reunification

A1 certificate, income, living space

  • Spouse: Must present an A1 certificate (Goethe A1, telc A1, ÖSD A1) before entry. Exceptions: if the partner is highly qualified or is studying in Germany.
  • Children: Minors under 18 can follow suit without a language test, provided custody has been clarified.
  • Livelihood: The person living in Germany must prove sufficient income (approx. €2,000-2,500 net for a family of four).
  • Proof of accommodation: Sufficient living space (approx. 12-15 square meters per person).
The marriage must already exist before the visa application. A marriage filed later in Germany will not be recognized. Marriage certificates must be legalized and translated.
