02.05 Β· Learn German

Learn German.
The right course.
At the right time.

Learning German is relevant for almost every route to Germany – but which course applies depends on the destination. A course for the study visa does not automatically count towards the integration course. A Goethe certificate is not valid everywhere where TestDaF is required. Anyone who gets this wrong will repeat the course – or lose the deadline.

A1-C2 CEFR levels
B1 Integration course
B2-C1 Study & work

What I see

The most expensive mistake in the German course.

It doesn't happen when you're learning. It happens beforehand – when choosing the course.

What happens Someone books a German course and learns for several months. In the end it turns out: The certificate will not be accepted by the university, embassy or employer. The course must be repeated.
What's missing The question: Which certificate, which level, and which provider is used for mean Way recognized? This question comes before the course - not after.
Specifically A Goethe certificate B2 does not count as a study requirement if the university requires DSH-2 or TestDaF 4Γ—4. Both are B2 level – but not the same document.
What counts? First clarify the goal. Then check which certificate applies to it. Only then book a course.

Which course applies to what?

Five situations – five different answers.

01
Goal: Study in Germany

DSH or TestDaF – not the Goethe certificate

Almost all universities require you to study in German either DSH-2 (German language test for university entrance, Level B2/C1) or TestDaF 4Γ—4 (four areas, each level 4). The Goethe certificate B2 or C1 is usually issued not accepted – even if it is of the same language level. There are exceptions - always check the requirements of the specific university.

Language visa for German course Only DSH and TestDaF are considered university entrance qualifications. Goethe certificates are usually not sufficient.
02
Goal: Settlement permit & naturalization

B1 – recognized proof of residence permit

For the settlement permit and naturalization B1 German compulsory. Certificates from Goethe-Institut, telc, Γ–SD, VHS German course test are accepted and BAMF exams (naturalization test). For the EU Blue Card for faster settlement permits: B1 after 21 months instead of 33 months.

03
Goal: training or qualified work

B2 – for applications and visa procedures

For the training application, B1 is formally the minimum – Practically most companies recommend it B2 for one realistic chance of being accepted. For the skilled worker visa (Β§ 18a/b) and the EU Blue Card, there is no legal language level minimum, but the embassy can be skeptical if your German level is low. Goethe-Institut, telc and Γ–SD are accepted.

For nursing professions: C1 is the de facto standard, even if B2 is officially sufficient. Approval authorities sometimes require a specialist language test.
04
Goal: Language course in Germany (visa)

Language visa – up to 1 year, no job offer required

Anyone who wants to attend a German course in Germany – without studying or having an employment contract – can one Language visa apply. It is valid for up to 12 months. 06
After entry Β· Mandatory or voluntary

The integration course (600 hours of German + 100 hours of orientation course) is funded by the BAMF and ends with the integration course certificate (B1). For some residence permits it is Duty.
