TestDaF

What sets the TestDaF apart – and for whom it is indispensable

The TestDaF is operated by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Society for Academic Study Preparation and Test Development (g.a.s.t.). It is standardized, computer-based (predominantly digital since 2025) and available worldwide.

01 Meaning

Comprehensive recognition at all German universities

  • Equipped for study: TestDaF tests exactly the skills that are necessary for academic studies: understanding lectures, reading specialist texts, writing summaries and discussions.
  • Standardized assessment scheme (TDN 3–5): TDN 3 ≈ B2, TDN 4 ≈ C1, TDN 5 ≈ C2. For approval, TDN 4 is usually required in all four areas. Some subjects (e.g. German studies, law) require TDN 5 in individual parts.
  • Frequency: There are six fixed exam dates per year (February, April, June, July, September, November). Easy to plan.
  • Digital implementation: Since 2025, the TestDaF has been offered primarily as a computer-based exam (TestDaF digital). The exam process is similar, but the operation requires training.
TestDaF is not intended for naturalization or settlement permits - you take B1 there. TestDaF is exclusively for university entrance. If you don't want to study, TestDaF is the wrong choice (and too difficult).

Exam format

This is how the TestDaF works – four parts, digital operation

The exam lasts approximately 3.5 hours in total, plus breaks. All four parts are equally important; the overall result is made up of partial results (TDN).

02 Exam structure

Reading comprehension, listening comprehension, written expression, oral expression

partDurationContent
Reading comprehension60 mins3 tasks: 1) assign short texts, 2) detailed questions about a longer text (multiple choice), 3) complex scientific article with yes/no/text says nothing.
Listening comprehensionapprox. 40 minutes3 listening texts: 1) everyday dialogue, 2) interview (approx. 5 min.), 3) scientific lecture (approx. 6 min.). Play once.
Written expression60 mins
Graphic description + discussion of a topic (approx. 250 words) – structure with introduction, transition to the graphic, description of the development, interpretation, outlook.
Oral expressionapprox. 35 minutes7 tasks on the computer (recordings): from a simple description of a graphic to a discussion of a controversial topic with advantages and disadvantages.
The biggest hurdle for many is oral expression on the computer: you have to speak without a real partner, react to verbal input and limit your answer within the time limit. Be sure to practice timing with the official model tests.

Recognition

What TDN values does a university need?

Most universities require TDN 4 in all four areas for direct admission. Some universities accept TDN 3 in one part if another compensates for TDN 5 (rare).

03 Conditions of admission

Typically 4×4 (TDN 4 in reading, listening, writing, speaking)

Examples:

  • TU Munich, LMU Munich, University of Heidelberg, RWTH Aachen – 4×4 TDN 4.
  • technical colleges – often 4×4, sometimes also TDN 3 is permitted in one part (see approval regulations).
  • Artistic colleges – possibly lower requirements, but usually also 4×4.
  • preparatory college – TDN 3 in all parts is often enough to be accepted into the preparatory college.

If you don't reach TDN 4, you can retake the test - there is no limit. The results are valid for 12 months (this is enough for the application).

Check the admission regulations of your desired university. Some universities have specific minimum values (e.g. TDN 4 in all parts, but TDN 5 in writing). Answer the question before registering for the exam.

Comparison with alternatives

TestDaF vs. DSH vs. telc C1 University vs. Goethe-C1

TestDaF and DSH are the safest options for university entrance. telc C1 HS and Goethe-C1 have weaknesses in terms of acceptance.

04 Decision support

Which test suits your situation?

ExamRecognitionAvailabilitySpecial feature
TestDaF 4×4ComprehensiveWorldwide, many datesStandard, digital, more expensive
DSH-2ComprehensiveOnly in Germany, at universitiesCan be free/low at college
telc C1 UniversityPartially (more and more)In 3,000+ centersCheaper, available worldwide, but not entirely sure
Goethe-C1Very rareWorldwide, many centersNot recommended for studying
Recommendation: If you live abroad and want to study in Germany, TestDaF is the safest choice. If you are already in Germany, you can register for DSH at the university - this is often cheaper and the exam is tailored to the university. telc C1 HS is an alternative for applicants who cannot take TestDaF - but acceptance is not guaranteed.

Preparation

This is how you prepare for the TestDaF

Since the TestDaF specializes in academic German, general language courses are not sufficient. Use specific materials.

05 Materials & Courses

Official model tests, preparation courses, online tools

  • Model tests (free): There is a complete model test as a PDF with audio on testdaf.de. Also the official app “TestDaF-Portal”.
  • Textbooks: “With success to the TestDaF” (Klett), “TestDaF exam training” (Cornelsen), “TestDaF sample exam” (Hueber).
  • Online courses: Deutsch-Uni Online (DUO), TestDaF preparation courses from the Goethe Institute, also via platforms such as Udemy.
  • Preparatory courses: Many adult education centers and language schools offer special TestDaF courses (4-8 weeks, approx. 300-800 €).

Strategies

  • Describe graphics practice: Learn standardized phrases (“The graphic shows…”, “It can be seen that…”, “Compared to this…”).
  • Listening comprehension: Listen to scientific podcasts (“Current Research” (DLF), “WDR Zeitzeichen”).
  • Reading comprehension: Read newspapers and scientific articles actively under time pressure (approx. 20 minutes per page).
  • Speaking: Practice on the computer with a recording program - response times are short. Try out the tasks from the model test.

According to TestDaF

What comes after the TestDaF – studying, doing a doctorate or improving your language

Once you have passed the TestDaF (4×4) you can apply to any German university. If you have only achieved TDN 3, attend a preparatory college or repeat the exam.

06 Further steps

Application for study, preparatory course, repetition

  • TDN 4 in all parts → You can apply directly for a course of study. No further language test necessary.
  • TDN 3 in some parts, TDN 4 in others → Possibly admission to the preparatory college (depending on the university). Then the assessment test (FSP).
  • TDN 3 in all parts → Definitely preparatory college. This extends the preparation by about 1 year.
  • TDN below 3 in one part → Repeat the exam after thorough preparation. TestDaF can be repeated indefinitely.
Even if you only achieved TDN 3, you can retake the exam later. Many people make the mistake of relying on the preparatory course without trying - but a year goes by quickly. Repeat the TestDaF until you reach TDN 4.
